THE LOCKDOWN MUSIC CHART

It’s another Friday that does not feel like a Friday: If you have stayed at home every day from Monday, what in this world will make you say, “Thank God it’s Friday”?

For us music buffs, the fact that the clubs are closed and no concerts to look forward to is very painful. Still, life continues, and for sure the music scene has not relaxed one bit. The first four months of 2020 has already given us tons of memorable hits to savor. In the pop genre (which loosely encompasses the so-called afro beats; local hip hop and modernized highlife music), the beats have continued to roll in spectacular fashion.

Building from the remarkable success that was 2019, the Naija pop scene got off the marks practically from the very beginning of the year, and the momentum has simply escalated ever since.

Rema’s ‘Lady’, Teni’s ‘Billionaire’, Naira Marley’s ‘Tesumole’, Davido’s ‘1Mill’, Kizz Daniel’s ‘Pak ‘n’ Go’, and Fireboy’s ‘Vibration’ are just a few of the early blasters that got the club and street rocking into the new year. By the time, we took stock this week, it was obvious that DJ Neptune, Falz (‘the bad guy’), Rema and Lord Sky were the early champions of 2020 with their songs, ‘Nobody’, ‘Bop Daddy’, ‘Beamer’, and ‘Corona Virus’ respectively. Add to that list the raspy ‘Geng’ from Mayorkun, the artistically brilliant ‘Secret’ by Burna Boy, and the infectious ‘Billionaire’ from Teni; and if you walk further down the street to the adult-only zone, you will definitely get inspiration from the eros-charged lyrics of Reminisce’s ‘Instagram’ or Reekado Bank’s ‘Rora’, and of course the ever present marlian tribe.
